Deadly Bird Flu Hits US, Affecting Millions of Birds
Outbreaks in Poultry and Wild Birds Raise Concerns
A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus outbreak has hit the United States, affecting poultry and wild birds. The virus, which is deadly to birds, has been detected in multiple states, including Michigan, Texas, and Iowa.
The outbreak in Iowa is the largest in the US since 2022, affecting 42 million egg-laying chickens. The facility where the outbreak occurred has been quarantined, and all birds will be depopulated to prevent the virus from spreading.
The H5N1 virus is widespread in wild birds worldwide and has been causing outbreaks in poultry in several countries. The virus can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected birds or their secretions. However, human infections are rare, and no human cases have been reported in the US during this outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the situation and working with state health departments to respond to the outbreak. The CDC recommends that people avoid contact with sick or dead birds and report any suspected cases of avian influenza to their local health department.
